ECLECTICA #12: HAZY RECOLLECTION compiled June 1999 by Paul Estin http://home.intranet.org/~estin/cd/ Yet another collection of eclectic cover songs. The title of this mix comes from the fact that I seem to have many fine covers of Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze, some (not all) of which are included among the covers here. Some particular comments: There are several Beatles songs this time around, featuring one in particular by the group Big Daddy. They’ve provided many fine covers with their twisted ‘50s-rock versions of so many songs that were never intended to be ‘50s songs, but I think that their finest is “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” which answers the musical question no one sane ever asked: what if Jerry Lee Lewis covered The Beatles? Nearly as warped, though, is Alan Copeland’s song combining “Norwegian Wood” with the theme from “Mission: Impossible.” Ciccone Youth is another name for the band Sonic Youth, who put out a joke album of cover songs, primarily of Madonna tunes (thus their alias name), though I’m fondest of their so-bad-it’s-fun version of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love.” “I Got Rhythm” (Robert Palmer) and “Nice Work If You Can Get It” (Sting) are my favorite songs from the tribute album “The Glory of Gershwin.” “Green Haze” by Elvis Hitler is... well, it has to be heard to be believed. Another psychotic combination of music and lyrics. “Goodnight Irene” by Brian Wilson starts a little rough, but them it smoothes into a bizarre Beach Boys style rendition of the Leadbelly song. I rather like it.
