ECLECTICA #18: At Night, The Ice Weasels Come compiled August 1999 by Paul Estin http://home.intranet.org/~estin/cd/ I put together this mix by starting with various eclectic songs about love and relationships, and then adding a few more favorites to the collection. Oddly enough, most of them are about dysfunctional ties, inappropriate mates, and all- around unhappy situations. I don’t know if that represents my state of mind, what I happen to have in my CD collection, or the fact that it’s easier to make a good eclectic song about a negative relationship! The rough order of the tracks is to start with relatively happy “meeting” situations [1-3], go on to some odd significant others [4-5] and weird sorts of relationships [6-12], a section about breakups and aftermath [13-20, including a lot by Weird Al], some more “types” of lovers [21-22], and finally a particular relationship as sung by Andy Breckman. A few of these songs have been favorites of mine for a long time, especially “Agony” from “Into the Woods,” “Emotional Rollercoaster” (chosen as a “theme song” by a couple I used to know in Chicago), and two favorite tunes by Marshall Crenshaw which aren’t funny per se but have a tongue-in-cheek quality I like a lot. Also, there’s Christine Lavin’s “Sensitive New Age Guys”—and yes, I once did indeed get up on stage with her to be a SNAG myself. :-) Some relationship songs from previous Eclectica mixes: 01-09 (I’ll Love You) Till The End Of The World (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) 01-11 Barbie Girl (Aqua) 02-09 Little Skipper (Mel Cooleys) 02-13 Doris & Edwin: The Movie (Christine Lavin) 03-13 Hello, I Love You (The Cure) 04-15 If I Fell (The Beatles) 05-14 When I Go Out With Artists (Crash Test Dummies) 05-17 Frozen Puck To The Head (Captain Tractor) 05-18 Gotohell (Captain Tractor) 06-05 Shopping Cart Of Love: The Play (Christine Lavin) 07-01 My Baby Loves A Bunch Of Authors (Moxy Früvous) 07-07 Guggenheim Love (Ookla The Mok) 07-18 Tokyo Love Song (The Arrogant Worms) 08-14 Every Day I Write The Book (Elvis Costello) 08-17 Tone Deaf (John Forster) 11-10 Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah! The quote comes from the “Life In Hell” comic strip by Matt Groening, who also created the TV programs “The Simpsons” and “Futurama.” According to the strip, the quote is actually attributed to Nietsczhe. Uh, yeah.
