ECLECTICA #22: Sequels & Tangents compiled August 1999 by Paul Estin; recompiled October 1999 http://home.intranet.org/~estin/cd/ In this collection, I return to some of the themes covered in previous Eclectica mixes, and add some other songs which fit well with them. Various previous Eclectica mixes, including #10, #14, and #20, touched on the theme of homosexuality. Tracks 1 & 2 on this mix do, too. 2 & 3 collectively return to “hypotheticals and speculations” from Eclectica #4 “That Wasn’t Chicken.” Then it’s on to more violence [track 4], types of potential mates (which was not really covered in #18 “At Night, The Ice Weasels Come”) in tracks 5-9, and culture [10-15]. Next, it’s a return to the politics and history of Eclectica #10 (“The Opinions Expressed...”) with tracks 16-22. Track 17, “The Ask Not Waltz,” was created by Hank Levine and George Atkins by splicing together a well-known JFK speech with an “answering” chorus. It was climbing up the charts when suddenly November 22, 1963 arrived. Bad timing, there. Finally, this mix concludes with a couple of songs which touch, in their own ways, on the topic of race. About the cover Alas, I’ve forgotten which Web site I found as the source for this comical photo. I actually did enjoy the movie “Titanic,” but got quite a kick out of this supposedly “original ending from the movie.”
