"the egs and bacon and potatos's, lol not a bad song."

I'm thinking a little bit about a next project, and what I will want to do differently for this project.
    1. One problem is the script. There's only the thinnest of plots, with no real character development.
    2. There are no camera cuts.
    3. Not enough clutter in the apartment. There should have at least been a coffee maker!
    4. Animation could be improved in a number of spots.
    5. There were a number of problems with the design of the characters.
    6. I could have cleaned up the sound a bit more.
    7. It took way too long. I put it down for long periods of time. I wish I had more steady time to devote to animation.

    Some things I'm proud of:
    1. I actually got it done. It was actually ambitious for my skill level.
    2. I don't think it's awful.
    3. The way I did the vocals worked out pretty well.
    4. I liked how I kept track of hours.

    It's been a long time since I've updated. Here's the run-down.

I tied for 3rd place out of 4 for the contest. After that, I didn't do a lot of work on it for many reasons, most of them being work.

Today I finally got EPB submitted. (It showed up about 2 weeks later.)

Added a frying pan to the stove, gave Sal a spatula, cleaned up animation in various places. There is so much more I could do, but the competition deadline is coming up in a couple of days. Left to do: camera.

This is the final full length, give or take a second. Added title and credits, and song over credits. On the list of things to do are finish the rough animation, add placemats and food, fix up some of the modeling problems, add more junk on the counters, re-do camera placement, and polish the animation.

    Quicktime MOV/320x240/20859572 bytes (19.8MB)

About 55 seconds of rough animation, almost to the end of the song. Considering the animation is currently 1:20, that's not too bad. On the list of things to do are finish the rough animation, add titles and credits, add placemats and food, fix up some of the modeling problems, add more junk on the counters, re-do camera placement, and polish the animation.

  • 2006-08-19 The entire animation WIP
    Quicktime MOV/320x240/19423896 bytes (18.5MB)

Another work-in-progress. This one is using more hard-core compression and is much smaller. I was going to say there is not much more done than the last one, but now there is almost 35 seconds of rough animation.

  • 2006-07-23 The entire animation WIP
    Quicktime MOV/320x240/60229848 bytes (57.4MB)

Here is the first full-length work-in-progress. There are about 20 seconds of roughed-in animation, and a first pass at lip syncing is in there, as well.

  • 2006-06-18 Animatic Test
    Quicktime MOV/320x240/6500510 bytes (6.19MB)

This is the first attempt at creating an animatic, which is supposed to give a rough idea of timing and position. The voice is mine, doing both parts. I definitely think HAL's line, "Eggs, potatoes, and bacon" should be more enthusiastic and excited since SAL is putting the food down when he's saying it and he can see for himself what it is. Also, the word "great" is in there one too many times.

  • 2006-03-18 Gecko body done
    PNG/478x510/46701 bytes (28.4KB)

The female character (Sal), in progress. The body (undressed) is complete. I have to add clothes, then texture everything, then add the skeleton and some poses.

  • 2006-01-23 Gecko in progress
    PNG/353x450/29172 bytes (28.4KB)

The female character (Sal), in progress.

  • 2006-01-17 Apartment Test
    PNG/640x480/190272 bytes (185KB)

Here is a first attempt at the apartment. The cabinets, counter, sink, stove, walls + floor, and table are all modelled by me. The plates, chairs, toaster, and wine bottle are free models. The stove still needs a little work. The table could be textured, as well as the walls and other places. But it's enough to move on.

  • 2006-09-25 The Script (v2)

(plus some minor edits from a few months later)

  • 2005-09-25 Lip Sync Test
    AVI/DivX/8 seconds/320x240/2225152 bytes (2173KB or 2.1MB)

A simple test with redone mouth shapes. Since I did this, the character sheet is going to be redesigned so the character will be completely remodelled, making the test useless other than as an educational exercise.

  • 2001-08-05 First Animation!
    AVI/Indeo 5.0/3 seconds/320x200/738816 bytes (721.5KB)
    First Animation! 06 Aug 2001
    Quicktime-MOV/Sorenson/3 seconds/320x200/744812 bytes (727KB)

My first animation. The sound stinks! I think because I brought in an .mp3, and the Indeo encoding didn't like it so much. I'll try a .wav file next time around. Still lots to do, including motions and poses, fixing up the kitchen, make the two characters different, put extra stuff on the table, fix up the table, get better lighting, extend it to the full length (about 30 seconds).

This was the first time I used Hash's dopesheet feature. I must say I'm impressed with how much work it saves!

  • 2001-08-01 Concept Sketches
    JPG/1083x870/49310 bytes (48KB)

These are really things I did a looong time ago, and just recently found. One of the things I'm proudest of with the design is the "mouth at end of snout". I noticed that on Dennis, the mouth is at the base of the snout, which seems to require him to do weird poses when he talks so you can see his mouth.

  • 2001-07-25 Initial Scene Placement
    JPG/640x480/35303 bytes (34.5KB)

I finally have a real project. This is the initial placement for a scene I'm working on. Horrible lighting, etc., but I'm just starting. My goal is to have them sing the song "Eggs, Potatoes, and Bacon".

  • 2000-11-19 Lizard
    PNG/603x921/57251 bytes (56KB)

Here's as far as I've gotten on my creature. The right side (his right side, that is) looks different than the left ... I'll be deleting it, then I'll mirror his left side (copying, flipping, and then re-attaching). I don't like his forehead, and (you can't see at this angle) the back of his head, but he's getting closer to what I was hoping for.

Coming up will be adding bones so I can move him and adding textures so he has color.
